Louis Braille was born on 4 January 1809 in Coupvray (Seine-et-Marne), the fourth child of the saddler Simon Rene Braille was born near Paris.
At the age of three years, Braille injured when playing with a pointed awl on the eye, and he went blind sided. In view of the fact that the injury was not adequately treated, there was an infection, which was also blinded the other eye. The father sent his son in 1819 at the Paris Institute for the Blind Founded in 1784, the “Institut des jeunes aveugles”. The largest part of the course was kept orally. As a child he developed a desire to invent a Braille. At the age of 13 he made the acquaintance of Charles Barbier for the military developed “night writing”. At age 19 he was appointed assistant teacher at his school. In 1836 he published a selection of works by the blind English poet John Milton. Despite the simple learnability of the font, Braille writing could not prevail for long. Instead, the Braille system was not invented as yet, so further efforts have been looking for a solution. With changing the school’s Board Braille Braille was banned because it was feared an insulation for the blind, if blind people could communicate in their own writing.
Braille was sacked and burned all the books. Numerous attempts have failed to recognize his work. Likewise, a epistle to the French interior minister. Only in 1850, two years before his death, Louis Braille’s writing officially approved for teaching in schools for the blind.
Louis Braille died on 6 January 1852 in Paris at the consequences of a lung ailment, which he had already contracted at a young age.
International triumph of his invention, he could not see anymore. At a congress in Paris in 1878, Braille was officially declared the international method for teaching in schools for the blind. Then it found its way into peoples and languages around the world. At its 100th Death in 1952 his body was exhumed and reburied in the Panthéon in Paris.
